(1378-01) Recently retired superintendent Chris Carson provides honest details on mistakes made during 40 years of turfgrass management on golf courses. He and Bingru Huang, Ph.D., review solutions using the science behind the failures. Poorly rebuilt greens (and the decisions that led to problems), overdosing with PGRs, weak irrigation management, indifferent shade management, avoidable winterkills and a list of associated difficulties will be discussed. Each practice will be presented as a case study, with lessons learned, to analyze the situations and solutions from scientific perspectives of turfgrass stress physiology in terms of balanced carbohydrates, water, and nutrients needed to maintain quality golf turf on putting greens and fairways. You’ll walk away with a clearer picture of the many products and tools available to for turfgrass management for your course: what works, what doesn’t and why.
