Tim Barrier, CGCS

Tim Barrier has been a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) for 16 years. He has been a golf course superintendent for almost 30 years and in the golf industry for thirty-eight years. He is the former two-term president of the San Diego Golf Course Superintendents Association and served on the Board of Directors of the SDGCSA for six years. He also has served on the California Golf Course Superintendents Association Board of Directors and numerous GCSAA Committees. Barrier was most recently the golf course superintendent at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., from 1992 to 2021. In 2006, RSFGC hosted the USGA Boys Junior Amateur Championship, including numerous other top amateur championships. Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club was the site of the Bing Crosby Pro-Am known as “The Clam Bake” in the 1930s before moving to Pebble Beach after WWII. During his tenure at RSFGC, Barrier was involved in more than $20,000,000 in capital improvements, including a complete renovation with renowned golf course architect David McLay Kidd. Before moving to Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, Barrier was the golf course superintendent of the Tournament of Champions Course at La Costa Resort and Spa. The site was host to PGA Tour’s annual Tournament of Champions, which hosted the PGA Tour and the PGA Senior Tour, now known as the Champions Tour. Barrier began his career on the crew and then assistant superintendent at Shadowridge Golf Club under his mentor Michael D. Swing, CGCS, from 1983 to 1989. Barrier is a former instructor at Miracosta College in Oceanside, Calif, and The San Diego Golf Academy, where he taught turfgrass management and golf course design. Presently Barrier is the Principal at Tim Barrier & Associates, a golf industry consulting firm.
