Robert Helland

Robert Helland is the director of congressional and federal affairs for GCSAA. Based in the Washington, D.C. area, he works with policymakers in Congress and the Executive Branch on legislative and regulatory issues impacting golf course management. He also supports the integration of GCSAA’s lobbying efforts with its Grassroots Ambassador program, which links superintendents directly with their members of Congress. Helland worked with GCSAA staff Chava McKeel and Michael Lee to help bring the largest contingent of industry professionals to Washington as part of “National Golf Day.” Before joining GCSAA full time, Helland served as its Washington-based lobbyist as an attorney with the law firm of Reed Smith LLC. There he also helped other trade associations, municipalities, manufacturers and non-profit clients build bipartisan relationships with congressional staffers on issues impacting energy, environmental, health care and taxation policy. Helland holds an undergraduate degree from The College of New Jersey and a juris doctor degree from Widener University School of Law. From 2001-2005, he worked in the United States Senate on transportation and environmental policy issues for former New Jersey Senator and Governor Jon Corzine. He is also the author of more than 100 articles on legal, regulatory, and legislative issues, including over a dozen on behalf of the GCSAA.
