Thomas A Nikolai, Ph.D.

Thomas A. Nikolai, Ph.D., spent 10 years working on golf courses prior to entering the world of turfgrass research in 1989. He earned a Ph.D. at Michigan State University in 2002 and if you currently lightweight roll your greens, mulch tree leaves into your rough, or have no golfers on your course that wear metal spikes, it is due in part to results from Nikolai’s research. He is author of the book The Superintendents Guide to Putting Green Speed and is world renowned as the “Dr. of Green Speed” due to his numerous studies that investigate putting green cultural and mechanical practices. He has given hundreds of turfgrass management presentations on 5 continents, 22 countries and 37 states. In 2003, Nikolai was voted The Outstanding Faculty Member by his Michigan State University students and in 2004 he also took first place for “General Feature Article” writing for commercial publication. He is also the creator, coordinator, and host of the Turfgrass Talk Show which is a unique method of discussing golf course management issues.
